The Pitt of Zombies
kaywebs: I had many impressions of Pittsburgh before I actually came and saw the city for myself. First off, I kind of expected the city to be an average American city, filled to the brim with things to do and bustling with activity at all hours. This, however, is not the case at all. Every night as soon as all of the white collar office workers go home for the day, downtown Pittsburgh winds...

The Next Page: Boxer Jack Johnson -- the fight... →
A terrific article by Michael Connors from this past Sunday’s Post Gazette. From the article: “Although Jack would always claim to have married Etta in Pittsburgh in January 1909, that was a lie. I found a copy of their marriage license at the City-County Building. The nuptials took place on Jan. 18, 1911 — 99 years ago tomorrow. Where the marriage license asked for occupation,...

Lawrenceville Urban Forest →
“Drawing from the city’s roots in the steel industry, the park will feature steel benches and retaining walls, native plant species and incorporate shaded areas, said Christine Brill, a Lawrenceville resident and local architect.”

Lethem on Brooklyn →
This isn’t related to Pittsburgh directly but I love the way that Lethem talks about representing Brooklyn.  Here are a couple excerpts: When I ask about his version of Brooklyn, Lethem replies: “I don’t have a ‘version of Brooklyn’ – Brooklyn’s too big. I didn’t set out to write a great Brooklyn novel, or a Brooklyn novel at all. I set out to write the...

New Kids on the Block
There will indeed be some new kids on the block come next week. I’ve decided to integrate Tumblr into my writing class this semester.  Students will be required to maintain a Tumblr account/journal and occasionally write about their impressions/imaginings/representations of Pittsburgh.  Those with wicked good posts will receive an honorable reblog.

Irrational Beliefs about Pittsburgh
I was born in Pittsburgh, and I’ve spent most of my life here, but there are still certain irrational beliefs I hold about the city. Irrational Belief #1: The South Hills are actually a different planet. Maybe this stems from the fact that I need to go through tunnels in order to get there. This obstacle alone makes it feel much further away than it actually is.

Pittsburgh 2050: 2010
Over the last few months I’ve been missing.  Well, teaching’s not the only thing that’s been keeping me busy lately; I’ve also been spending some time in the future.  Yes, that’s right, I’ve borrowed Doc Brown’s DeLorean once again to take a trip into Pittsburgh’s future.  But seeing as we’re heading into a new year, I thought I’d let everyone know, in this 2010 edition of Pittsburgh 2050, what...
