There will indeed be some new kids on the block come next week.
I’ve decided to integrate Tumblr into my writing class this semester. Students will be required to maintain a Tumblr account/journal and occasionally write about their impressions/imaginings/representations of Pittsburgh. Those with wicked good posts will receive an honorable reblog.
Alex addresses an important issue for us Pittsburgh Tumblrs - one that I addressed a little while ago, but I’m pretty sure not many people read… or maybe they did read it and just chose to ignore it. Both are completely possible. But here it is again:
“Fellow PGH Tumblrs, I have a request. If you’re not completely in love with one of the tags on your blog, might I suggest using Pittsburgh as one of them? It would be a great way for all of us to find each other, and build a big happy Pittsburgh Tumblr community.
Tumblr’s Directory feature is nothing short of an illiterate designer’s trash heap, in my opinion, so there’s no option to view tags in alphabetical order. BUT, if you go ahead and type in http://www.tumblr.com/directory/pittsburgh, you can access those of us with Pittsburgh tags directly.
So, if you dig the idea, go ahead and tag your blog and ask your fellow Tumblrs to do the same. Thanks!”
So, there it is, one more time. Is there a down side to this I’m not seeing?
Is it too much to ask to start doing some massive reblogging of this post so we can try to get everyone together?
Can we get an easier way to find Tumblelogs in our area? I don’t want to click on each one of those red dots.

I like you, I really do. But if we’re going to get serious, we need to talk. Now, don’t get me wrong, you’re really cool and sexy, and I totally dig your interface. I wanna take our relationship to the next level, but your functionality… well, let’s just say people have been talking. And you know I’m not one to really care about what others say about us - “They’re totally wrong for each other,” … blah blah blah. We can make this work. But listen, some things need to change.
1. Directory: I like to meet new people. So I checked out your directory. Totally hot tag cloud. But seriously, what is this? Unless I wanna look through the big fatties at the top, this arrangement is a disaster. Is an alphabetized version of this too much to ask for? Oh, what’s that? Check out your search function? I’m glad you mentioned it.
2. Search: Search is great for finding something in my posts or my dashboard, but for finding something on Tumblr… well, I’m really not sure what to say. It’s almost as useless as, well, Tumblarity.
3. Tumblarity: If I wanted to participate in a popularity contest I’d go back to high school or run for public office. Tumblr, sometimes I just don’t understand you.
Sincerely,
Writing Pittsburgh
